Join me LIVE from the cockpit for flight leg twenty-four of Wing Threads: Flight Around Oz! We’ll be flying over Dharawal, Eora, Kuring-gai and Awabakal Country from Wollongong to Lake Macquarie in New South Wales! 🛫
Sydney here I come! To get around Sydney controlled airspace, I took the famous Victor 1 VFR route that takes you out over the water past the Sydney CBD. I gotta say, it was a butt clenching flight as I had to remain at 500 feet over the water at a minimum of 1 nautical mile off the coast 😬 I was wearing my life jacket and had my heart in my throat for much of the trip!
That said, it was so amazing going past Centrepoint Tower, the Opera House and of course, Sydney Harbour Bridge! What a trip! I was relieved when I made it to Barren Joey Heads and was within gliding distance of land again.
At this point, there was a lot of low, grey cloud and I had to come down to 1000 feet for the remainder of the flight along the coast to Lake Macquarie. My mate, Chris Bird, met me at Terrigal in his trike and we flew back to Lake Mac together. So much fun! Just like old times 😄
When I landed, several of my friends from Hunter Bird Observers Club, BirdLife Australia and people I’d house sat for over the years were there to welcome me. So good to see Rory Duncan from Airborne Australia again too!
